CORRECTING TEEN BEHAVIOR IN SCHOOL

BRYCE ON EDUCATION

- The need for common sense.

READER: "Tim, how do we change the trends and thinking among teens in school?" (W.A.R. of Tampa Bay, FL)

This story began with a dialog I have been having with a local Middle School teacher about the addictive nature of technology and blossomed into a discussion related to the problems disciplining students and changing teen behavior in school. His problems are certainly not unique, at least among Florida schools, e.g., students do not respect authority and possess low self-esteem, there is flagrant excessive use of technology, and there is a need for creating a culture of learning in schools. Come to think of it, this is not limited to Florida as I know other out of state school systems with the same problems. All of this distresses teachers who feel frustrated by current policies in public schools, and apathetic school boards.

To this end, I offer three rather obvious suggestions:

1. Instill and enforce discipline. School uniforms and behavior codes go a long way to solving this problem. A simple school uniform eliminates the need to make a fashion statement and puts everyone on the same level. In other words, take personal appearance out of the equation and let student academic records speak for themselves. This is no different than in the workplace which often has dress and conduct codes. Consequently, employee performance is based solely on output and quality. Having such codes in place are nice, but there is one catch; "it is one thing to enact legislation, quite another to enforce it" (Bryce's Law). Unless the school administrators or teachers are willing to enforce such codes, they are worthless.

A few years ago, I wrote about Caroline Haynes, a principal at the Tendring Technology College in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, UK, a secondary school. She adopted a zero tolerance policy on dress and conduct which led to the suspension of several unruly students. With these people gone, the other students had fewer distractions and could concentrate on their studies. Consequently, student grades flourished dramatically. It also affected social interaction as there was more courtesy between teachers and students, which elevated respect.

To take this further, about five years ago, I was involved with a business program at a local high school. As an experiment, we appointed a "Professional Attire Day," meaning the students in the business program were asked to dress up. Instead of t-shirts, shorts and gym shoes, they were asked to wear suit and ties for the men, and dresses for the ladies. Afterwards, we implemented a questionnaire for the students to complete in order to evaluate their experience. In general, the day was well received by the students who perceived it as a positive experience. They felt both mentally and physically sharp in their appearance, and appreciated compliments from the teachers who praised them. They also felt "Confident" and "Positive" as a result of dressing up, thereby heightening their self esteem. They also welcomed the idea of a more professional dress code, meaning the students saw the value of dressing properly and yearned for a better dress code.

My teacher friend pointed out schools tend to cater to complaining parents and go soft on the rules. Instead of getting the students to fall in line accordingly, the school must bend to the whims of the deadbeats. This means the minority of misfits are allowed to impact the school culture in a negative way, just the antithesis of Ms. Haynes at the Tendring Technology College.

2. Change the focus in schools away from testing, to learning. As mentioned, a structured school encourages a learning environment. The problem though in Florida, and I suspect elsewhere, is that the focus is on testing only. As a result, students become conditioned to pass tests, but not to think for themselves. The ultimate goal of education is to "learn to learn"; that the individual is encouraged to research and explore the world around them well after their schooling is over, and not just become another robot.

Unfortunately, lecturing, debating, and public speaking have all taken a backseat to testing. Without such vehicles, students do not learn how to properly address and challenge ideas in their walk through life, which handicaps them greatly.

Within the schools, teachers have emerged possessing a "Bachelor's of Education" degree or higher. This means they are proficient in education but not necessarily equipped to teach a specific course in Algebra, Geometry, Computers, Government, History, etc. As to the latter, I have seen schools who have "Education" teachers charged with running history classes. In it, they play a video of some passage in history and ask students to take a short test on it afterwards. Not surprising, there is no give and take between the teacher and the students. It would make more sense to have the class led by someone with a degree in history, who can lecture, explain why things occurred the way they did, and answer questions from the students. Unfortunately, this approach is fading into the past and we are left with nothing more than memorizing dates.

3. Lockup the cell phones. I have discussed the adverse effects of technology many times over the years. Yes, technology raises dopamine in the brain, the neurotransmitter associated with rewards, and works the same way as cocaine does. For more information on this, read "Glow Kids: How Screen Addiction Is Hijacking Our Kids-and How to Break the Trance Hardcover," by Dr. Nicholas Kardaras (St. Martin's Press).

Aside from possibly a handicapped person, there is no need for students to have telephones in the classroom. Some teachers insist on collecting phones prior to a class, others do not. There should be a standard policy instead.

There is a problem though, we now live in an age where "helicopter parents" want to talk to their offspring immediately after a class, particularly if it involves a critical test. If the student reports the test was too tough or was unsure of his/her performance, the parents call to complain to the teacher ASAP, thereby putting the onus of failure on the teacher and not the student.

What I have highlighted here is certainly not new. It is nothing more than common sense, which appears to be rather uncommon these days. Ultimately, it represents the fundamental differences between Public Schools and Charter Schools; whereas one caters to the whims of the students and parents, the other requires the students and parents to comply to school regulations.

All of this ultimately is based on our values (what we regard as right and wrong), perspectives and priorities. Something that has never changed over the years, regardless of the technology and political correctness of the day are three things:

* Teachers are responsible for teaching.

* Students are responsible for learning.

* School boards and school administrators are responsible for creating a culture conducive for both.

If everybody tends to their responsibilities, there should be no problem, right?

However, we must remember it is most definitely not the responsibility of teachers and school administrators to parent the students. They only want to impart the knowledge the students will need to shape their future and encourage them to excel. However, if the school system is lax in terms of providing the proper working environment, they are guilty of negligence and should be reprimanded or removed. Likewise, if the student is not there to learn and only be disruptive, they too should be reprimanded accordingly or removed.

It's simple, right?

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE SILENT MAJORITY?

BRYCE ON POLITICS

- And why are they remaining quiet?

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

READER: "Tim, why do people 'privatize' their political thoughts?" (C.P. of Tarpon Springs, FL)

Back in 1969, President Richard Nixon coined the expression "Silent Majority" when referring to normal citizens who were patriotic and God-fearing, yet silent in their political beliefs. Keep in mind, this was the end of the 1960's, a turbulent decade which bore witness to civil rights demonstrations, Viet Nam War protests, urban riots, political assassinations, hippies, yippies, and political activism. It was a time denoted by the rise of the Baby Boomers; a time when our culture was changing (e.g., music, movies, fashion, vernacular, etc.), a drug culture emerged, and our morality began to change. The "Silent Majority" could not relate to such changes, and preferred a more stable way of life. It was this group who elected Richard Nixon over former VP Hubert Humphrey in 1968, and over Sen. George McGovern in 1972. It will also be this group who will carry President Trump over the winner's line in November.

Ultimately, the Silent Majority represents the status quo, something young people naturally resist and try to overcome. We saw this in the 1960's, and we are seeing it again in the present decade. In both instances, the press covered the changes to our culture and even cultivated it.

Getting back to the reader's question though, why is the majority silent? Have they been intimidated and now afraid to speak up? Frankly, No. As evidence, consider the massive Trump rallies. No matter where President Trump goes, it is always a Standing Room Only (SRO) affair, and the silent majority voices their support. Such events represent more of a pep rally as opposed to a traditional political speech. By doing so, President Trump energizes his political base.

Aside from the rallies, most Americans just want to get on with their lives, which is why they are reluctant to wave flags, march in protests, or write editorials or simple letters to the editor.

So, why do people "privatize" their political thoughts? Simple:

1. Many people were not born with the gift of gab or know how to articulate their thoughts in print. It is not something they were gifted with in their school years, and explains why they are reluctant to do so today.

2. Some people are more timid than others. They are either too bashful or too courteous to say something derogatory about anyone or anything. They have either been trained to avoid the limelight or it is simply not in their DNA to complain.

3. The biggest reason though is people are consumed by their work and family. Both require considerable time and effort to master. This affords them little time to voice their political displeasure. They simply want time to relax and rest. To such people, they would rather be fishing, playing golf, or some other entertainment vehicle as opposed to butting heads with others over politics. Nevertheless, these are the people who quietly pay their taxes, come to the defense of the country, and vote.

If we had a responsible news media who would fairly represent both sides of the political drama, it wouldn't be necessary for people to voice their opinion as they could formulate it on their own. However, because of the irresponsibility of the news media, it is important for the silent majority to voice their concern if, for no other reason, than to seek the truth.

My children have grown into adulthood and are finding their place in society. I have told them the day will come when they will have to take a stand on politics. Currently, they are more concerned with work and their jobs, as I was at their age. However, I noticed as I got older, some members from my school years began to voice liberal dogma and, as such, I felt obliged to take them to task. At some point, my children, as members of the Silent Majority, will have to do likewise.

Keep the Faith!

ARE WE BETTER OFF UNDER TRUMPONOMICS?

BRYCE ON POLITICS

- A new Gallup Poll says "Yes."

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

A new Gallup Poll should be sounding warning bells to the Democrats, "More in U.S. Say They Are Better Off Than in Past Elections" (Feb 12, 2020). In it, the poll reveals 61% of Americans today believe they are better off than they were just three years ago, meaning under the Trump administration. This is significantly better than the mid-term reports of Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George H.W. Bush, which averaged a mere 48.75%.

The Gallup Poll assumes the country specifically feels more positive about the state of the economy. This is supported by another recent poll by ABC News/Washington Post (Jan 27, 2020) which stated:

"Key to Trump’s opportunity is a rise in economic confidence. One year before he took office, 63 percent of Americans said they were worried about maintaining their standard of living. Today, 43 percent say so, a broad 20-point drop in personal economic uncertainty... as reported Friday, 56 percent approve of his handling of the economy, up 10 points since early September to a career high."

The Gallup Poll supports this notion of economic confidence by stating 52% of adult Americans say it is easier to "go and buy things in the stores" than just three years ago. This too was higher than previous midterm election cycles where the numbers were closer to 40%.

The poll also noted 51% of Americans felt the nation was safer/stronger under President Trump, a six point difference than under President Obama.

The main thrust though of both the Gallup Poll and the ABC/Washington Post poll is regarding confidence in the economy, which is what the President and his administration has been touting for quite some time. It is their biggest asset going into the 2020 election. As I have said all along, "It's the economy, stupid!"

With this type of confidence, it is highly unlikely the American public will turn around and embrace Socialism as proposed by Democrat candidates. It simply will not happen and a sharp rebuttal is in the offing.

Knowing the President claims the prosperous times are due to his policies, the Democrats are desperate to undermine "Trumponomics." Working through the news media, they have tried to divert attention away from the economy, but Americans see through this smoke screen. They also tried to share credit in the economy's success claiming President Obama was behind it all, but this too has been rejected. Now, their strategy will be to claim the economy is not as good as the President claims it to be and will recruit economists to say so.

To illustrate, a recent CNS News report claimed:

"Despite creation of 225,000 jobs, a 3.6% unemployment rate, a 3.1% increase in earnings over the past year, and extension of the longest economic expansion in U.S. history, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) declared the January employment numbers 'the rot at the heart of the Trump economy.'"

"In a statement reacting to the January employment report, Pelosi said January’s numbers provide proof of 'all of President Trump’s mistruths at the State of the Union' when he touted his range of economic successes..."

However, if the polls mentioned herein are correct, the public will see through all this and it will be game, set, match in November.

IN WHICH DIRECTION ARE THE DEMOCRATS HEADING?

BRYCE ON POLITICS

- Which side is winning?

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

It is not much of a secret the Democrats have a divided party. One side consists of "moderates," representing traditional party values, and the other consisting of "extreme-Leftists," representing radical politics, such as Socialism, the New Green Deal, and a plethora of entitlements. The question is, which side is winning? In 2019, and for the first time ever, a Gallup Poll noted the majority of the party classified themselves as "liberals." This is to be expected as the Democrats began to turn extreme-left in 2016 when Sen. Bernie Sanders, an Independent from Vermont, began preaching his far-left dogma on the campaign trail to the Democrats. This opened the door in 2018 allowing extremist Democrats to be voted into the House of Representatives, e.g., Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) (aka, “AOC”), Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN-5), Rep. Ayanna Pressley (MA-7), and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (MI-13).

We are now in the early stages of the political primary season, and already we are learning more about Democrat inclinations from the voters. Between the Iowa Caucus and New Hampshire primary, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (MA), both generally acknowledged as representatives of the extreme-Left, pulled approximately 40% of the votes cast. This leaves approximately 60% for the other Democrat candidates. Some would claim Mayor Pete Buttigieg, former VP Joe Biden, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar are "moderates," but their background suggests otherwise as they subscribe to liberal doctrine. None could possibly be accused of being a conservative. All support abortion, open borders, health care, and additional entitlements. So much so, the Democrats are now referred to as the party of "giveaways."

The fact there is a 60/40 split in the party suggests the majority of Democrats are traditionalists and do not necessarily embrace radical concepts like Socialism. Yet, if front-runner Sen. Bernie Sanders lands the nomination, this is precisely what the party will ask Democrats to accept.

News reports claim voter turnout was down in both Iowa and New Hampshire. I could not verify this, but if it is true, why? Three possible reasons: general voter apathy, people believe there isn't a candidate who can beat President Trump, or more likely, the extreme-Left leanings are turning off traditional Democrats. Apathetic voters do not bode well for the party as we approach the elections.

The perspective of the party split is still a bit hazy, but will become clearer following the primaries of Nevada, South Carolina, and Super Tuesday. After this, we should have a complete picture of who is leading the party, "moderates" or the "extreme-Left."

As an aside, the New Hampshire primary also had a Republican contest. At this time, President Trump received approximately 128K votes, representing the largest voter approval by an incumbent President in history, easily trouncing the last three incumbent Presidents:

2020 - Donald Trump - 128,781
2012 - Barack Obama - 49,080
2004 - George W. Bush - 53,962
1996 - Bill Clinton - 76,797

The President received strong support as he has energized his base through a solid economy and anti-extreme-Left policies. It appears the more he is attacked by the Democrats, the stronger he becomes politically.

So, are the Democrats prepared to accept extreme-Left doctrine? Maybe, but the American people overall are not. Either way, this will be an awkward election for the Democrats.

Keep the Faith!

THE DEMOCRATS ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME

BRYCE ON POLITICS

- Only nine months left in the 116th Congress.

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

As of this writing, President Trump delivered his 2020 State of the Union address, was acquitted by the Senate of charges of impeachment by the House, and we are now less than nine months away from the 2020 election. Now that the President has been exonerated, and with little time left in the 116th Congress, what can we expect from the Democrats? As the smoke clears, it would be nice if both parties sat down and tended to the nation's business. There is obviously a lot to do, such as infrastructure, lowering the price of medicine, addressing education needs, and much more. I would like to believe we could begin again and get some of these pressing issues under control, but I am not optimistic.

Thus far, the only major milestone passed by the 116th Congress is the USMCA trade deal which was initiated by the President. Other than that, we have been in gridlock as the Democrats have practiced "resistance." The big question now is, will they continue to do so following the failed impeachment? As much as I would like to believe otherwise, I see no reason for them to change and, unfortunately, they will continue to resist this President as long as he is in office.

The fact the Democrats have been unable to dislodge this President, and watch his popularity grow in the process, fills them with rage. There are rumblings they will continue to issue subpoenas for former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton and Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney to testify before Congress. As in the first impeachment hearing, the intent is to besmirch the President's character. Should the Congressional Democrats persist in this endeavor, they will likely be committing political suicide as the country has had enough, except for the far-left who is Hell-bent on the destruction of President Trump.

There is no better example of the Democrats' hatred for the President than that of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA12) ripping up the President's manuscript following his State of the Union address on February 4th. Essentially, it represented a temper tantrum. The far-left may have loved it, but the rest of the country found it rather disturbing for the Speaker to act this way. This speaks volumes of the political polarity in this country and the unwillingness to seek a way to work together. This will undoubtedly taint the reputation of the party's leadership, not only of Speaker Pelosi, but House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD5), Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA28), Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY10), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL).

Such histrionics by the Democrats leads me to only one conclusion, the Congressional Democrats will remain at war with President Trump and any other future Republican successor. This will be on the minds of voters as we go into the election. Consider this, even with an obstinate Congress, President Trump has still been able to make great progress. The voters will then begin to ask how far he can go with a cooperative Congress, and vote accordingly.

The next Congress, the 117th, will be installed on January 3, 2021. If the 116th cannot make any measurable progress in the next nine months, there will likely be some significant changes in the 117th.

At this late date though, the Democrats have no choice but to play their hand out to the bitter end and let the chips fall where they may. Only a national election with a shift in the leadership of the House will change their strategy.

Keep the Faith!

FEBRUARY: BUSY HOLIDAY MONTH

BRYCE ON LIFE

- For a short month, we stay rather busy.

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

Even as a child, I always had a fondness for the month of February. It always seemed like the quirkiest month of the year. Maybe it is because it is the shortest month, or perhaps the first "R" in February is commonly pronounced silently. While seven other months have an extra day (31 in total), February was somehow shortchanged by two. Then there is the matter of Leap Year, which occurs every four years, whereby February picks up a day, yet is still less than all the other months. Imagine if your birthday was on February 29th, does this mean you only celebrate it every four years? One benefit would be your age would only be a quarter of what it is now, which would make me a teenager.

Other than the peculiarities of the calendar, February has some interesting days to celebrate:

Groundhog Day - this was my first indication that adults were truly mad. Why anyone would take their weather advice from a marmot was beyond me. The idea of the arrival of Spring was dictated by a groundhog is a bit much, even for a five year old. Yet, Americans seem to relish this day every February 2nd.

Super Sunday - for years, the Super Bowl was played early in January, shortly after all the college bowl games. Thanks to greedy owners though, the NFL championship kept getting pushed back until it finally settled on the first Sunday in February. This was probably done to give the players a couple weeks of rest until the next season begins. As an aside, I am old enough to remember the first Super Bowl in 1967 between Green Bay and Kansas City. As a fan of the old AFL at the time, I was disappointed until 1969 when Joe Namath and the NY Jets proved the viability of the league.

Valentine's Day - this too was an odd holiday for youngsters to learn. I can remember dutifully making Valentine cards in elementary school and having to exchange them with the girls in the class. I prayed they wouldn't get the wrong idea; after all, they had "cooties." Other than that, this holiday reminds me of the Valentine's Day Massacre in 1929 when Al Capone's gang "rubbed out" Bugs Moran's gang in Chicago. I found it interesting how they couldn't pin the assassination on Capone. The police disguises were also a nice touch.

Aside from the mobsters, we should all use Valentine's Day as a means to express our love and appreciation for others. It's important.

President's Day - is celebrated on the third Monday of the month and observes the birth of George Washington (Feb 22nd) and Abraham Lincoln (Feb 12th). This was an important date in grade school as it was used to teach us the significance of both presidents. As young children, we learned about Washington chopping down his father's cherry tree, crossing the Delaware River, surviving Valley Forge, and becoming the "Father of our Country." As for Lincoln, we learned he was an avid reader, a rail splitter, the President during the Civil War, and his assassination. We also learned the importance of his "Gettysburg Address." Some of these lessons may seem rather shallow, but we probably learned more about these men than most of the kids in high school today. Historians today question the cherry tree story, but it served as an effective lesson in morality.

For a short month, we sure stay busy!

Keep the Faith!

THE IMPEACHMENT CHARADE IS FINALLY OVER

BRYCE ON POLITICS

- And what have we learned?

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

The impeachment trial is finally over and, as expected, President Trump was acquitted. Anyone really surprised? Democrats will claim this was a cover-up by the Senate, but the reality is this represents another win for the president. Despite this, I am glad it is over as I found it rather boring and predictable in terms of finger pointing and jurisprudence. This desperate act also represents another chapter of how the Democrats have wasted an enormous amount of taxpayer money and time to do whatever they could to resist the president; for example:

* They radically slowed the process of selecting members of the president's cabinet, ambassadors, judges and other presidential appointees.

* Turned the Brett Kavanaugh Hearing into a three ring circus by intentionally smearing his name to make the president look bad.

* By insisting on the Mueller Witch Hunt, the Democrats failed to reach anything conclusive in terms of establishing a relationship between the president and the Russians. The investigation, lasted two years, and cost taxpayers millions.

* Triggered by the Democrats refusing to pay for border security, the Government Shutdown of 2018-2019 cost the government $5 billion. In the end, President Trump still moved forward on building the southern wall.

* The Impeachment Hoax was designed by the Democrats to besmirch the character of the president and keep him off the ballot in November. The case was easily defeated and the president gained political strength simply because the public grew weary of the histrionics of the Left.

Let us also not forget the findings of the FISA Investigation, the problems associated with Sanctuary Cities, and the "Do-Nothing" House which basically threw the government into gridlock. All of this was supported by the "Fake News" of the main stream media who fanned the flames of hate in the country.

All of these attempts were designed to not only vilify the president, but to distract the public from his accomplishments, such as:

* Successfully installed a substantial number of federal judges at many levels, including two Supreme Court justices.

* Built and opened the American embassy in Jerusalem. While other presidents in the past claimed they would do it, it was President Trump who saw it through to completion, even in spite of resistance from Democrats. More recently, the president revealed his plan for peace between Israel and Palestine, using a two-state approach, something that has never been offered before.

* Cut bureaucratic red tape to lift the burden of government off the shoulders of businesses thereby allowing them to move forward.

* Crushed ISIS and is slowly pulling us out of the Middle East.

* Curbed illegal immigration.

* Moved us to energy independence.

* Reinvigorated our military and cleaned up the VA.

* Caused new and stronger trade deals, particularly with USMCA, China, and many more on the way.

* Created a robust economy which is now the envy of the world. The Democrats fear this the most, which is why I refer to it as the "Big White Elephant in the Room."

President Trump has become politically stronger following the impeachment acquittal. His base is energized, and independents are leaning his way. In contrast, the Democrats have branded themselves as untrustworthy stewards of the House, a stigma which will haunt them until election day. The Americans want results, not soap opera.

You have to pity the Democrats going into the 2020 election as they are about to be mutilated politically. Their resistance has left them with an image of being an impediment to progress and are now portrayed as spiteful people only concerned with political control and not the best interests of the country overall. Then again, it was their own doing. Their strategy to vilify the president was an enormous gamble which backfired on them. When you couple this with the far-left leanings of the Democrat presidential candidates, you have the perfect storm which will lead to their demise.

One thing I have observed about the Democrats during President Trump's first term, they do not accept defeat graciously. It is time for an overhaul within the party or split it into moderate and far-left factions.

THE JOY OF SLOW COOKING

BRYCE ON COOKING

- It's all in the rub.

Coming from the north, I was trained to cook meat rather quickly on an outdoor grill. Maybe it had to do something with the winter weather. Nonetheless, be it steaks, hamburgers or chops, the idea was to come home, slap some meat on the grill, throw some salt and pepper on it, flip it, and serve it up piping hot. This was matched by the warp speed by which we devoured the meal. From start to finish, maybe 15 minutes, tops. Then, off to watch the evening news (burp).

It's not quite that way down here in the South where I have learned to slow things down while cooking. I now "rub" seasoning on the meat well beforehand (sometimes as much as 24 hours), put it on the top level of the grill, turn down the burner to low, and kick back and enjoy a drink or two while waiting for the meat to cook.

It is not uncommon for me to slow cook baby back ribs for two and a half hours. I stretch out the cooking of steaks and chops as long as possible depending on the size of the meat. Even simple chicken wings typically takes me close to an hour to cook. In other words, I have learned to become patient and not rush the meal.

A lot has to do with the seasonings I use. There are obviously many, but I typically use salt, pepper, garlic powder, Old Bay, paprika, cayenne pepper, and maybe some brown sugar. I rub this into the meat carefully and let it sit for quite awhile, overnight preferably. Only during the last 15 minutes will I consider applying a barbecue sauce, which I apply evenly, not outrageously. To me, it is the seasonings that enhance the flavor, not the sauce. The longer you let it sit on the meat, the better it will penetrate.

One trick I learned a long time ago was to cover steaks with a generous amount of Kosher salt. I usually put this on the night before, or possibly in the morning thereby giving it time to sweat the juices from the beef, causing it to become tender. I have used this on just about every cut of beef imaginable and it has never let me down. It can turn a cheap and tough cut of beef into something quite tender.

Taking your time in cooking allows you to kick back, enjoy a drink or two, and possibly watch a little television outside on the patio (Yes, this is what we do in Florida). In other words, I no longer play "Beat the Clock" when it comes to cooking. When I take my time, the food not only tastes better, it digests better, and I believe this is a preferable way of cooking then the frenzy of the north.

As I indicated, this approach is very popular in the South. Down here, people like to talk about "smoking" (and, No, I certainly do not mean cigarettes), the ingredients for their "rub," the amount of time to cook something, and how good it looked and tasted. It's not about competition, it's about the constant quest for flavor. Interestingly, people down here enjoy watching barbecue cooking shows on television or the Internet, almost as much as they enjoy fishing.

My next challenge is to cook a prime rib on the grill. I saw a demonstration on YouTube which caught my fancy. Time to cook: two and a half hours. Watch the demo and you'll start to understand why we like to do things slower in the South.

Bon appetit y'all!

WHO IS REALLY ABOVE THE LAW?

BRYCE ON POLITICS

- Is there an inconsistency?

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

Throughout President Trump's impeachment trial in the Senate, the prosecuting House Managers reminded us several times, "Nobody is above the law, particularly the president." It became the mantra of the Democrats while litigating the case and, if anybody defied them, they were criticized as unpatriotic and accused of lacking any common sense.

Actually, I do not have a problem with the basic concept and accept the notion, "Nobody is above the law." Unfortunately, this is simply not so as we have watched the super-rich and power-elites elude prosecution many times over the years. For example, money has kept members of the Kennedy family from getting into trouble on more than one occasion, starting with Ted Kennedy at Chappaquiddick. I am still at a loss as to how the Clintons have avoided prosecution over the years. The reality is, if you have the money for the best attorneys and/or hold political strings, you really can be "above the law."

Recently, because of the Senate trial of the president, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-NH) was unable to spend time in Iowa, the highly contested site of the first presidential caucus. Consequently, he sent Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY14, aka "AOC") to Iowa to campaign on his behalf while he attended the trial. During her stumping for Sanders, AOC told voters the senator stood out because he was in favor of breaking up Immigration (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). She said, "Sen. Sanders is the only candidate to commit to breaking up ICE and CBP."

Democrats have long been known to support open borders, as they represent new voters to support them. Further, the controversial concept of Sanctuary Cities, as offered by metropolitan areas controlled by Democrats, provides a safe-haven for illegal immigrants. This establishes an inconsistency by Democrats claiming illegals are "above the law."

If the Democrats truly believe nobody should be "above the law," they would dismantle the sanctuary cities and assist ICE and the CBP in capturing illegal immigrants. Unfortunately, they do not, which labels them as hypocrites as they only accept "above the law" when it suits their political agenda.

Frankly, the Democrats' insistence that nobody should be "above the law" is laughable.
