THE SUMMER OF HATE

BRYCE ON POLITICS

- Enough is enough!

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

In 1967, hippies gathered in San Francisco for "The Summer of Love," a phenomenon featuring peace, love, music and dope. It captivated the imagination of the country at the time. Singer Scott McKenzie sang a song written by John Phillips (of the Mamas and the Papas), titled "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)," which became a mega-hit and anthem for the Summer of Love. This was a major cultural phenomenon at the time. Although the clothing, sex and drugs upset parents, it was still peaceful in intent.

Today though, we are experiencing another cultural phenomenon on a much broader scale. Unfortunately, it is more concerned with hate, as opposed to love, which leads me to call it, "The Summer of Hate," and is ultimately motivated by the 2020 elections. During the last 30 days alone, we have witnessed a wide variety of changes to our country:

Corporate America is now frightened to be accused of racism and, as such, they are rapidly re-branding a plethora of products, including:

- Cracker Jack and Cracker Barrel are said to be considering name changes as the "cracker" moniker is said to suggest racism, where a whip was allegedly used to keep slaves in line.

- Rice Krispies are said to be accused of being racist as they feature three white people ("Snap," "Crackle," and "Pop"), but no black faces.

- Quaker is supposed to be re-inventing the "Aunt Jamima" brand as blacks feel the character stereotypes black women as being nothing more than a cook. The same is said to be true of Uncle Ben's Rice, and the character on the Cream of Wheat box.

- Ice cream favorite "Eskimo Pie" is considering rebranding their product so Eskimos will not be demeaned.

- And I'm told, PETA recently accused plain cow's milk as a symbol of white supremacy.

This has put companies on the defensive. What's next? Colas shouldn't be brown? Mister Clean is too white? Pets shouldn't wear a collar as it is demeaning? Was Jack Daniels a racist? Where does it stop? The point is, it doesn't, at least not until after the elections. Corporate America will spend millions, if not billions, on re-branding their products so they can be in line with political correctness. This is incredibly inflationary as the companies will not eat the expense, but will inevitably pass it on to consumers instead.

Then we come to the world of entertainment and sports, whereby:

- Movie classic, "Gone With the Wind," arguably the greatest movie of all time, is being shelved as it discusses slavery and the Civil War.

- Warner Brothers is said to have taken the shotgun away from cartoon's Elmer Fudd as it poses a threat to opponents of the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights (the right to bear arms).

- It has been proposed the Texas Rangers of Major League Baseball drop their team name, the "Rangers," as it is alleged the original Rangers were racists.

- The University of Cincinnati (UC) is considering removing the name of Marge Schott from the school's baseball stadium. Schott, who passed away sixteen years ago, was well known as the former owner of the Cincinnati Reds. Her philanthropy was well known and she literally gave away millions to a variety of charities, including two million dollars to build the UC stadium. Yet, she is now charged with racism. Marge may have been rough around the edges, but she had a generous heart. My question is, where were the charges of racism when she made her donations? Hypocrites.

- Both the National Football League and NASCAR now claim it is okay to take a knee when the National Anthem is played. What does this teach our youth, that it is okay to disrespect the country? Au revoir NFL and NASCAR.

These acts by the entertainment and sports industries are trying to alter our sense or morality and patriotism through political correctness.

Then we have the problem of defacing or tearing down historical icons of our past:

- A Seattle statue of the "Father of our Country," George Washington, was pulled down. Other historical plaques and statues are facing similar fates, such as that of our Third President Thomas Jefferson, the principal writer of the Declaration of Independence, as well as Presidents Andrew Jackson and Theodore Roosevelt, and discoverer Christopher Columbus. Even a statue of "the Great Emancipator," Abraham Lincoln, may be removed in Boston, and a statue of Union General Ulysses S. Grant, representing the side freeing the slaves, was toppled. Remarkably, a statue of Lenin stands proudly in Seattle untouched (and No, I do not mean John Lenon). Interestingly, Vladimir Lenin, the founder of the USSR, was responsible for the creation of the Gulag concentration camps where upwards to 70,000 people were used for slave labor, and 14K-20K members of the clergy were executed. Yet, his statue in Seattle is unblemished.

Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D), has also ordered the removal or paintings and statues of former Speakers who had a connection to slavery and the Confederacy, even though they served as Speakers well before the Civil War.

What's next? Most likely we will see a changing of our currency and coins, whereby our founding fathers will be re-examined for their attitudes and the far-Left will demand their removal. I do not think the critics will be happy until they have re-written the history of the 18th & 19th centuries, which I personally consider the most interesting history of all. We will also likely see the 20th century challenged as well.

More immediately, we are seeing the emergence of political settlements, such as Seattle's Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), who are trying to bar the police and re-create a form of government with a Socialist agenda. Actually, this is anarchy at work and what we can expect in the coming months. The organizers claim they want to defund police departments, but the reality is they want to obliterate them. Without a form of law and order, they will be allowed to run amok and tear society apart. As to Trump Republicans, the Left continues to harass their opponents, as seen at the recent Trump Rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Make no mistake, these zones are designed to provoke confrontation with authorities, particularly police. Ideally, the anarchists want a fight, much like the 1968 Chicago DNC riots, to make the police look bad, or to ignite a battle featuring lethal weapons.

Undoubtedly, much more is on the way, particularly as we get closer to the election.

- We will witness attacks on conservatives and the Trump campaign.

- We will witness more attacks on our institutions, our culture, and our sense of right and wrong.

- We will witness more attacks on our history and icons.

- And we will witness attacks along racial lines as identity politics will be actively used. These attacks will only turn the clock backwards in terms of race relations, certainly not forward.

- The mantra for the summer is simple, "Attack, Attack, Attack," and never apologize.

This is all from the playbook of the far-Left, who is trying to reinvent our sense of history, values, culture, and government. It is also intended to make white people feel ashamed, but I contend this will backfire on the Democrats as people finally say, "Enough is Enough!" Watch for a massive push-back in November from the silent majority, you know, the people who work hard for a living, pay taxes, and just want peace and prosperity. The harder the Left pushes now, the more it dooms the chances of the Democrats in November. It is interesting to see how hatred can drive a political campaign. All of this is a reflection of the desperation of the Democrats.

So, get ready for "The Summer of Hate." Frankly, the drug smoking hippies of 1967 do not sound too bad anymore, do they?

ARE WE FORGETTING THE PLEDGE?

BRYCE ON POLITICS

- Indivisible?

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

Like most of you, I learned the Pledge of Allegiance during grade school (aka, elementary). For me, I was pleased to stand by my desk, put my right hand over my heart, and recite the pledge with gusto. I found it to be a patriotic message and denoted my commitment to the country. I was pleased to do it, and still do so at several meetings I attend. As an aside, back then it was considered an honor to hold and present the flag before the class during the Pledge.

The pledge was originally devised in 1892 as a means to promote Americanism, something sorely needed at the time. Since then, it has been modified over the years, adopted by Congress in 1942, and the pledge we know today was finalized in 1954.

Today, I'm not sure people think of the meaning of the Pledge anymore, but rather recite it as a rote exercise. In other words, little thought goes into its meaning. I started to think about this recently and decided to dissect the pledge; here it is in its entirety:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

1. The initial part, "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands..." represents a commitment by the person to the flag as it is an important symbol or icon representing our country, more specifically, "the Republic." This is important as it clearly shows we are not a Democracy, but a Republic instead, something most young people fail to understand.

2. "one Nation under God" - the "under God" expression represents the last modification to the Pledge in 1954, and was intended to thwart communism, which practices atheism. This was a growing concern at the time as we entered the Cold War.

3. "indivisible" - meaning we stand united as a people, particularly in times of peril. I would like to believe this is true, but recent events dividing the nation casts doubt over the validity of this idea. Many people would like to see us divided and the country transformed into some other form of government.

4. "with liberty and justice for all." - this implies we are to be treated equally under the law and entitled to certain freedoms. It also suggests we respect the rule of law and apply it fairly and equitably.

The Pledge is one simple sentence consisting of 31 words (and 139 letters), yet it says a lot and the person who recites it should understand its meaning and not treat it frivolously as it is an expression of our belief in and commitment to the country.

Due to the freedom of speech and expression, citizens are not required to recite the Pledge, but willfully failing to do so suggests the person does not believe the contents of the Pledge and implies the person is anti-American.

As for me, I'm still proud to stand for my flag as I know it represents the overall Republic and the Constitution from which it is based. Reciting the Pledge is but one small way to show my respect and appreciation for this country. I, for one, do not take it for granted. God bless it.

WHO IS REALLY DIVIDING THE COUNTRY?

BRYCE ON POLITICS

- It is not the president.

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

Whenever you ask a member of the Left, why they hate President Trump, the Pavlovian response is normally, "Because he is dividing the country," that he is "polarizing," even labeling him the "Divider-in-Chief," thereby painting him as a racist, a threat to the nation, and to the Constitution. This notion has been repeated so many times, it is now nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction. If you challenge these people to explain their rationale, the most likely response is, "He acts unpresidential." The news media gladly endorses this premise and promotes its usage, but the question remains, is he really dividing the country? I simply do not see it.

I will not deny the president appeals more to the right, than the left, but it takes two to Tango, and it could be argued the division of the country widened more under President Obama, who appealed more to the Left and alienated conservatives. So much so, he refused to work with the Republican-led Congress at the time. We could track it back further to President Nixon's Watergate investigation, or President Clinton's impeachment, or the fundamental differences of President Carter vs. President Reagan, or the up-and-down differences between the Clinton/Bush/Obama administrations. No, the division in this country started well before President Trump, yet he is being blamed exclusively for it.

The Left and the news media encourage this notion of presidential divider. Just about every Democrat and media pundit have labeled him a, "Racist, Xenophobe, Homophobe, anti-feminist, Fascist, Nazi, etc.," in the hopes these labels will somehow stick in the minds of voters. To a certain extent, they have, but mostly to the Left, and not the Right who simply does not buy it. Actually, use of these labels heightens anger issues on the Left, and the chasm between Left and Right grows larger.

President Trump is hardly any of these labels. For example, years ago his favor was frequently courted by black politicians who wanted donations for their political campaigns, which he gave, and his philanthropy for black related charities and projects, and again he gladly helped out. From this, he was awarded commendations from black organizations, such as the Muhammad Ali Entrepreneur Award (2007). However, since declaring his candidacy for President in 2015, the "racist" label somehow surfaced. The President has kidded he would still be popular with Democrat blacks today had he not decided to run for office.

If President Trump is guilty of anything, it is for running as an outsider against the Washington establishment, or as he refers to it as "The Swamp." This includes politicians, bureaucrats, lobbyists, the press, et al, who have been grazing peacefully on the taxpayer for many years. Because he challenges the corporate culture of the nation's capitol, it is no small wonder he faces stiff resistance from everyone, but President Trump is undeterred and continues to push forward to straighten out Washington.

The news media particularly dislikes this president as he resists their control. He is frequently misquoted and maligned by the press. So much so, he found it necessary to do an end-run around the media to get his message to the masses, using social media, such as Twitter. This exacerbated the relationship between the media and the president, but Mr. Trump had no alternative. While some people are offended by the tone of the President's Tweets, his supporters find it refreshing as they applaud him for standing up to the tyrannical press.

Then we have the matter of far-left groups who are much more divisive than the President. Groups like "Black Lives Matter," can easily be accused of being racist as they do not embrace all races and chafe at the mention of "All Lives Matter." Other organizations, such as Antifa, are dedicated to the overthrow of the United States and have adopted destructive tactics. Unlike these organizations, the President does not advocate burning, looting, and attacking people, yet he is the one accused of dividing the nation.

Interestingly, I find these young zealots possess no sense of American history or Civics (not to mention World History). They are uneducated and unsophisticated in such topics. Consequently, their naiveté makes it easy to manipulate them and use their energy for destructive purposes, such as the removal or defacing of historical markers. Because of their limited education, they are also quick to malign Capitalism and embrace Socialism.

Nothing seems to set the Left off better than a "Make America Great Again" hat. People who wear MAGA hats in support of their president are automatically accused of being racist by the Left. What we are witnessing is their attempt to control the dialog and dictate morality through political correctness. They are so boisterous about this, you are dismissed out of hand and not allowed to refute their argument. Clearly these are tactics of harassment and a genuine threat to freedom of speech. From the Left's perspective, their sense of morality is the only thing that matters, and everyone else's interpretation is evil and should be snuffed out. This too divides the country further.

Again, if the president is guilty of anything, it is that of being an outsider determined to bring pragmatic solutions to Washington DC, and the people there do not like it, as such, they zealously undermine him every step of the way. If this includes misleading the public, so be it. Make no mistake, we are embroiled in a cultural revolution, and when one person pushes, the whole organization pushes back.

No, President Trump is not a "Divider-in-Chief," that is a complete misnomer. He is the one person standing up for the American taxpayer and wants to return some sanity to our government after several years of erosion. The Washington establishment wants to see him gone and will go to any lengths to take him down. They have tried to assassinate his character through the Russia investigation, which led to a pseudo impeachment trial; accused him of incompetence during the Coronavirus panic, and now assail his leadership during this time of racial tension and police conduct. However, we are now less than five months away from our presidential elections. If you think it has been a nasty fight thus far, you haven't seen anything yet, as new charges and allegations will be leveled against the President from the Left. It will get worse before it gets better, but the president will stand his ground and fight back with the help of his supporters.

It's going to be a long, hot summer and the demonstrators will not go away anytime soon as they hold the spotlight of the press. No, it is not President Trump who is trying to divide the country, it is the Left who is Hell-bent on his destruction, and the USA as we have known it.

One last note, the concept of "acting unpresidential" keeps buzzing through my head. Do we elect people to "act" or to take charge, make the tough decisions and get things done? I'll take results over facade anytime, but I guess this is simply too divisive.

Keep the Faith!

EXCESSIVE USE OF PROFANITY

BRYCE ON LIFE

- Why do we accept it?

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

I've noticed profanity has become a natural part of the teenager vernacular lately, perhaps excessively so. I know teachers and parents who are very much concerned with this and are at a loss as to how to handle it. In my school days, we were all well aware of the words but knew better to use them in the presence of adults as schools still practiced corporal punishment back then. If you got out of line, you weren't just sent to detention, you were swatted with a paddle.

A lot has changed since then. Today, only 18 states in the country allow corporal punishment in schools. As many as 61 countries have outlawed it altogether. I guess this is another area where lawyers have gotten involved and threatened lawsuits on behalf of irate parents who refuse to discipline their own children and subject the rest of us to these clods.

In studying this issue, I noticed all 50 states in the country allow corporal punishment on the part of parents. Yet, I wonder how many parents actually exercise such action. Again, back when I was a kid, if you got out of line, the old man would take a belt to your hide or your mother would wash your mouth out with soap if you spoke foul language (as happened to Ralphie in the movie, "A Christmas Story"). My great grandmother would use a switch or fly swatter if necessary. Such corporal punishment was not unique to my family as just about every kid on the block was keenly aware of the penalties for stepping out of line. It's called, "cause and effect"; if you screwed-up, you had to suffer the consequences. Believe me, we would have much preferred to have been "grounded" than face the wrath of a displeased parent. Being "grounded" just didn't exist back then.

I'm not sure why teens use profanity excessively; perhaps it is to appear "cool" or something they learned through the media, but it sure seems they drop the "F-bomb" as if it is a common everyday word. I'm no saint myself when it comes to swearing, but as an adult you realize there is a time and place for everything and you tend to use it more judiciously than our youth. Excessive use of profanity does two things; first, it waters down the effect of the word. Whereas profanity is normally used to stir emotions, inordinate use negates its effect. Second, excessive profanity is a significant indicator of someone's intellect. Rudimentary language reflects a rudimentary intellect. I am reminded of the old maxim whereby, "Profanity is the attempt of a lazy and feeble mind to express itself forcefully."

When youth uses profanity in the presence of adults, it does not threaten or embarrass adults as much as it causes the youth in question to lose all credibility in the adult's eyes. It is just not smart to do. I find it rather amusing when youth resorts to primitive profanity as opposed to articulating their position. It most definitely does not make them look more mature.

As for me personally, I tend to think of profanity along the same lines as Mark Twain who said, "In certain trying circumstances, urgent circumstances, desperate circumstances, profanity furnishes a relief denied even to prayer." Amen!

THE NEED FOR CRITICAL THINKING

BRYCE ON MANAGEMENT

- You get things done through people.

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

A few years ago I was managing a "crunch time" project involving a staff of eight programmers. The system design was well documented and very thorough (of course, we used "PRIDE"). Nonetheless, I found it important to start the day with a brief meeting where each person reviewed their progress and what kind of technical problems and interferences they were facing. From this, I developed a punchlist of action items to be resolved, and took the necessary steps to solve them. The meetings started at 8:00am and took no more than 30 minutes. It was brief, to the point and a good way to wake the staff up and put them to work for the day. It also allowed the staff to speak their minds, brainstorm, and share ideas. From this, they developed an esprit de corps and conquered a mammoth project on time. As the manager, I also saw it as a convenient vehicle to release stress and put the programmers in the proper frame of mind.

This story runs contrary to today's Theory X world of management where the opinions and ideas of subordinates are considered inconsequential. As for me, I saw it as a vital means to get everyone on the same wave length and solicit their support. What I learned from this experience was that if you are going to empower people, you must let them speak.
As an aside, even though this was a "state of the art" project involving new technology, we found there was no technical problem we could not overcome simply by putting the problem on the table and discussing it in a rational manner. Please keep in mind that I hardly consider myself a technical guru and, instead, allowed the staff to think aloud and explore alternatives. But such openness in today's corporate world is the exception as opposed to the rule. Many managers feel threatened by allowing their subordinates to think and, as such, suppress such discourse. Inevitably, this results in considerable frustration by employees who feel restrained by management.

PURPOSE

Aside from a means to release pressure, open critical thinking in the workplace provides several benefits:

1. Fertility of Mind - Due to the repetition of the workplace, workers often fall victim to complacency. By forcing them to perform mental gymnastics, they must stay sharp and on top of their game. Open discourse actually becomes challenging and results in friendly competitive debate.

2. Commitment - By creating a think tank environment, the employee realizes their voice is heard by management and, consequently, enhances their commitment to the company and the project. It also helps to thwart apathy and promotes participation. As an employee is allowed to speak more, they develop a sense of ownership of a project and a greater pride in workmanship. As such, it has a positive effect on staff morale.

3. Teamwork - Open communications promotes teamwork by forcing people to realize they are working towards common goals and raises awareness of their dependencies on each other.

4. Problem Identification - In terms of problems, nobody likes surprises. The sooner a problem can be identified, the sooner it can be addressed and solved. Establishing a punchlist of problems allows a manager to preemptively strike a problem before it festers and worsens. Get the problems on the table as soon as possible and chart a course of action to solve them.

5. Communications - An open dialog provides a manager with the means to dispel rumors and misconceptions and keep the staff on track. Open discourse also allows the manager to easily spot a disgruntled employee.

Permitting critical thinking in the work place is a wise investment in your staff and provides for their continuing education. However, if you do not care what they think, you won't be permitting such debate. But then again, the staff will be talking regardless if you grant them permission or not. Then why not channel this discourse and turn something negative into something positive?

IMPLEMENTATION

Establishing the proper forum for the exchange of ideas is important. Although there is a tendency today to implement such a forum through Internet Discussion Groups and Blogs, there is nothing better than face-to-face discussions. And because of the varied egos, interests, knowledge and levels of experience involved, it is necessary to establish certain operating rules regardless of the selected venue. Here are some suggestions:

* Keep the discussions positive and constructive. As Winston Churchill said, "Any idiot can see what's wrong with something, but can you see what's right?" Do not open Pandora's Box by allowing this to turn into a general bitch session. Further, a professional decorum should be observed. Do not allow personalities and politics to creep into the discussion. Members should respect all opinions, regardless who gives them. Because of this...

* The discussion must be moderated by someone who will fairly and honestly control the discourse. The one thing you want to avoid here though is full censorship which tends to alienate people. Be forceful in respecting the rules of discussion, but do not censor a person simply because you do not agree with him.

* Welcome all ideas, regardless if they are unorthodox or a bit avant-garde. Further, all ideas should be permitted without fear of ridicule or retribution. In other words, you do not want to inhibit participation. Even if someone is in the minority, allow them to take an opposing position but insist they adequately defend it (this inevitably results in some of the most stimulating debate of all).

* All persons must be identified, no anonymous feedback (this is particularly needed for blogs and discussion groups). You are looking for the participants to take a responsible role in the discussions.

* What is said here, stays here. This is a think tank for your group only. Their comments may be misunderstood by others. As such, privacy is critical.

Finally, if problems are identified and not addressed with no apparent reason, problems will inevitably ensue. If no action is taken based on their input, the staff will quickly realize that this is nothing more than a colossal waste of time.

CONCLUSION

I learned early in my business career that you get things done through people; that a single person cannot do everything. As such, it is necessary to respect the human spirit and allow it to flourish. I also learned that we enjoy life through the help and society of others. I have not yet met that person on this earth who knows everything and, as such, it is vital to exchange ideas, form consensus opinion, and evolve. By allowing employees to discuss pertinent issues, we promote communications and teamwork, establish trust, and conquer the pressing problems of the day. But to make this all happen, critical thinking must be channeled in a structured and positive way.

"I have never encountered a technical problem that couldn't be conquered with a little imagination, some concentrated effort, and a lot of good old-fashioned management."

BEWARE OF THE LINCOLN PROJECT

BRYCE ON POLITICS

- Democrats in GOP clothing.

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

I recently received a tip from a reader regarding The Lincoln Project, a group of people claiming to be Republicans and dedicated to the defeat of President Trump in 2020. If you listen to this group carefully, they would have us believe they carry the true spirit of the Republican Party, not President Trump. Their mission, therefore, is to simply "Defeat President Trump and Trumpism at the ballot box." They characterize themselves as "dedicated Americans protecting Democracy." Frankly, I see this as a Freudian slip as we live in a Republic, not a Democracy and, as such, hints at their true intentions, to become another political arm in support of the Democrats. I therefore describe them as "Democrats in GOP clothing."

All of the people connected to this project are either former political strategists who supported people like Sen. John McCain or Sen. Mitt Romney, or Trump administration wannabe's who were rejected. They are moderates in every sense of the word, who were snubbed by the White House, for good reason is my guess, but there is nothing worse than a spurned political strategist who now seeks revenge.

Their web site claims, their group consists of "prominent republicans." Prominent? These are RINO's who are more dedicated to politics in general as opposed to a specific ideology. However, you be the judge; here are the key people in the Lincoln Project:

George T. Conway, III - is an attorney but is probably best known as the husband of Kellyanne Conway, the well known counselor to President Trump. Mr. Conway had been considered for posts in the Justice Department, including Solicitor General, but the appointment was given to someone else. His feud with the president grew from then on which gained considerable attention due to his wife's dedication to the president.

Reed Galen - according to the Lincoln Project web site, Reed "is an independent political strategist. He left the Republican Party in 2016 and has spent the last three years dedicated to the political reform movement, creating a better system for all voters."

Jennifer Horn - is perhaps the most conservative of the group and is a former Chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party. She was the first Republican woman in New Hampshire nominated for Federal office, but lost to Democrat Paul Hodes in the general election. In 2010, she ran again but lost the Republican primary.

Mike Madrid - according to the Lincoln Project, Mike "is a Republican strategist and former political director of the California Republican Party. He serves as a senior advisor to the California Latino Economic Institute."

Steve Schmidt - is a moderate Republican, now independent, who had worked on the campaigns for Sen. McCain, President George W. Bush and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. In May 2018, Schmidt had a problem accepting the new American embassy in Jerusalem, along with the president's immigration policies. This led him to renounce the GOP and become an independent. He now refers to the Republican Party as, "corrupt, indecent and immoral."

Stuart Stevens - was a senior strategist for Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign.

John Weaver - a political consultant best known for his work on the John McCain presidential campaigns, as well as former Ohio Governor John Kasich.

Rick Wilson - another former GOP strategist and political media consultant. Wilson is a well known critic of the president, and author of the book, "Everything Trump Touches Dies."

So, are these people "prominent Republicans?" Their names are not well known by the public, and I can hardly call them committed Republicans. No, these are RINOs who are beginning to realize the GOP has changed under Trump; it is no longer moderate and no longer accepts the Washington establishment. As to being political consultants, they are now on the outside looking in. Frankly, it is fair to say their ideology is more aligned with the Democrats, more specifically to former VP Joe Biden who they have already endorsed.

Why did the group use "Lincoln" in their name? According to their web site, they liken their mission to saving the union as Lincoln did during the Civil War, claiming President Trump is the cause of the political divide in the country. This is a mistake as this clearly started years earlier between the Democrats and the GOP; e.g., the Nixon investigation, the Clinton impeachment, the hounding of George W. Bush by the media, the weak administrations of Carter and Obama, and the divisive attitudes of Barack Obama. This historical background is conveniently overlooked, causing them to pin the sole responsibility on the President.

If you read between the lines of their rhetoric, this group simply doesn't want to admit it is President Trump's personality that rubs them the wrong way; that he acts "un-presidential." They obviously overlook his accomplishments.

As to what type of work they perform, first, we have to recognize they are nothing more than a Political Action Committee, which means they can collect money for political activities such as writing, making videos, and supporting candidates of their choice. This is not so much designed to turn Republicans away from President Trump, as much as it allows them once again to play "political strategists." From what I have read thus far, their work will only interest Democrats, the news media, and Romney related Republicans (RINOs), but not true Republicans who are tired of the "business as usual" in the nation's capitol.

So, what really is the Lincoln Project? Nothing more than a PAC for Democrats based on sour grapes. To deal with these people properly, we must first understand their intentions, so be advised; these are Republicans unlike whom I have ever met. They should simply change their party affiliation and quit trying to fool everyone.

UNDERSTANDING THE INSURRECTION ACT OF 1807

BRYCE ON POLITICS

- And the parallel to yesteryear.

Following the recent destruction of American cities by rioters, looters and thugs, President Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 empowering him to deploy U.S. military and federalized National Guard troops within the United States to suppress civil disorder, insurrection and rebellion.

The Act has been invoked several times over the years by U.S. presidents, primarily when requested by a governor or state legislature. However, the president does have the authority to invoke it on his own. This too has been done several times over the years. For example, it was used in 1871 by President Ulysses S. Grant (R) to suppress the Ku Klux Klan in South Carolina, and in 1872 in New Orleans following the unrest resulting from a tainted gubernatorial election. In 1957, President Dwight Eisenhower (R) used it to protect the "Little Rock Nine," African-Americans enrolled in Little Rock Central High School. Likewise, President John Kennedy (D) invoked the Act in 1962 to suppress segregationist riots at Ole Miss, and 1963 to enforce desegregation orders on Alabama public schools.

One of the more interesting uses of federal troops against a local populace was in the New York City draft riots of 1863. This was triggered by the Enrollment Act of March 3, 1863, the first draft to be enforced in the United States (the Confederacy had already implemented the draft a year earlier). The draft was not well received in most northern cities, New York in particular. Here, poor Irishmen, unable to raise the $300 with which to buy their freedom, virtually controlled the streets. This resulted in bloody riots between July 13-17 where they burned, pillaged, and killed to the cry, "It's a rich man's war, but a poor man's fight!"

Second Term New York Governor Horatio Seymour (D) ultimately gave in to brute force. Addressing a crowd of hoodlums before City Hall, he promised to get the draft repealed if only the lawlessness would stop. His plea accomplished nothing. For two more days the mobs controlled the city. Then troops arrived fresh from the Gettysburg battlefield and restored order. Following this, the officials in Washington drafted only 2,300 people from New York City, hardly more than had been injured and slain on the streets.

As an aside, because Union troops had to be called in from Gettysburg to suppress the New York riots, the north missed a golden opportunity to chase and finally destroy Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, thereby extending the war.

Like today, the New York Governor opted to play politics as opposed to addressing the problem through law and order. As governor of one of the largest states in the Union, and being a Democrat, Seymour was one of Lincoln's major opponents. His handling of the draft though, and the resulting riots, ultimately led to his downfall, as well as his party. Later in 1863 Republicans swept the midterm elections, winning all of the major offices and taking control of the State Assembly. And finally, in 1864, Seymour was voted out of office and replaced by a Republican.

The parallel to today is uncanny, particularly as Democrat governors spurn President Trump's offer to assist them as their cities burn. In 1863, Governor Seymour was worried about being too harsh on the rebellious Irish as he perceived them as voters for his party. However, the people stepped forward and basically told Seymour, "enough is enough." History has an interesting way of repeating itself.

THE POLITICAL CONSEQUENCES OF GEORGE FLOYD

BRYCE ON POLITICS

- Antifa raises its ugly head again.

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

Three things occurred to me as I watched rioters and looters burn American cities following the tragic George Floyd incident:

First, it was a nifty way to cure COVID-19. The virus was forgotten faster than President Trump's impeachment. Not only is the American public tired of COVID-19, so is the news media. It has become glaringly obvious, people want to return to the economic prosperity we enjoyed prior to the COVID-19 panic. The Dow is already rebounding and we will put people back to work, much to the chagrin of the Democrats. Plain and simple, the people want the prosperity we had before and have had enough of the media's shenanigans.

Second, the destructive element in the Floyd protests was triggered by far-left agitators, namely Antifa, a group of zealous young people bent on destroying the country. President Trump is now pushing to have Antifa declared a terrorist group, thereby allowing the government to address them under the Patriot Act. This must be approved by Congress thereby presenting an interesting dilemma for the Democrats; Antifa ultimately represents the paramilitary arm of the Democrats, and includes a substantial number of voters. Should they be declared terrorists, this will stain the reputation of the Democrats. In addition, if Congressional Democrats vote to declare Antifa terrorists, they will lose a lot of their own voters in the fall, but if they don't declare them terrorists, they will be viewed as supporting terrorism in general. In other words, it is a "lose-lose" proposition for the Democrats.

As an aside, the image of Antifa members incarcerated at Guantanamo Bay is very appealing to me. Through interrogation, they would likely name George Soros as the mastermind behind it all. Go figure.

Third, all of this means an assured Trump victory in the Fall. The American people want peace and prosperity, not helter-skelter. If the Floyd people had protested peaceably, there would have probably not been a problem. The fact looters and rioters showed their ugly faces doesn't sit well with the public, and since they are more identified with Democrats as opposed to Republicans, this means it is going to hurt the Democrats in November. It has also set race-relations back once again.

Democrat Mayors and Governors who allowed the violence to occur will pay a heavy political price in the fall, as well as city councils and state assemblies. By allowing this violence to fester and grow, the Democrats should be worried as they most likely lost the House, the Senate, and the White House, not to mention governor mansions and mayoral seats.

If people had just protested peacefully, the Democrats would have had no problems. The fact they didn't just cost them the election.

EVERYTHING YOU KNOW IS WRONG

BRYCE ON LIFE

- Gosh, I hope not.

Click for AUDIO VERSION.
To use this segment in a Radio broadcast or Podcast, send TIM a request.

Years ago, the Firesign Theater comedy troupe recorded an album entitled "Everything You Know is Wrong" (Yes, I am a fan and still have the original LP). This particular album was a satire of New Age beliefs whereby they contend everything we have learned is absolutely wrong and we are all being intentionally misled. Large or small, everything we know is wrong; e.g., that the south won the Civil War, that the Aztecs invented the vacation, etc. It's a very entertaining album which Firesign fans know well.

As I grow older I get the uneasy feeling everything I've learned to date is wrong. It's hard to describe, but it is a very frustrating feeling and leaves you somewhat bewildered. Let me give you some examples...

I was brought up to believe if you worked hard, and kept your nose clean, everything would work out for you; that your company would keep your best interests at heart and, in the long run, you'll do just fine. As we all know, there is no such thing as corporate loyalty anymore and, in this dog-eat-dog world, trouble somehow seems to find us, regardless of how honest and forthright we try to lead our lives. Further, it seems unscrupulous cheating and dishonesty is rewarded as opposed to punished. "Quick and dirty" solutions also seem to be preferred over craftsmanship and quality. Instead of getting to the root of a problem, we only address its symptoms for the sake of brevity. In other words, facade is preferred over substance.

I was also taught you should pay your bills on time, and avoid incurring debt which would be difficult to pay back. Now it seems "take the money and run" is the modus operandi of a lot of people, businesses, and government. Between our lenient bankruptcy laws and our inclination to spend, people are taught not to pay their bills. After all, someone else will take care of it for you, right? This also gives me the uneasy feeling that perhaps my money is not my own, even though I worked hard to earn it.

As I was growing up I was taught everyone should be treated fairly; to give each person the benefit of a doubt until proven otherwise; that it was also important to be responsible, and your word was your bond. However, it seems morality is not currently in vogue and notions such as honor and principles are politically incorrect.

Finally, in grade school I was taught the United States was a great country we should all take pride in, and that government was a servant of the people, not the other way around. Boy, I guess I really got this one wrong.

It's a bit disheartening to realize what you thought was right is wrong, and vice versa. That two plus two no longer equals four anymore. It's all very confusing. Then again, perhaps it's not my age that caused this epiphany, but maybe I'm sensing nothing more than changes in our culture. If, in fact, everything I learned is wrong, I sure hope I come down with a bad case of Alzheimer's Disease soon so I can blot all of this out.

It is disturbing to discover the world described in Firesign Theater's album makes more sense than the real world.
